Here are a selection of short video clips (usually about 2 minutes) taken from the society’s collection. To view each video click on the arrow in the middle of the clip then click on the icon in the bottom right hand corner to maximise the image.
Clip 1 is titled “Our Town” although it should more correctly titled “Our Village” and shows scenes filmed around the 1960’s when Stream Cottage was still thatched.
There are scenes of the old Mexborough Pub (now demolished) on the corner of Carr Lane and Main Street.
RAILWAY BRIDGE DEMOLITION
Clip 2 is the demolition of the railway bridge over Main Street that carried the Crossgates to Wetherby railway line which closed to all railway traffic in 1964. This was the first line to be closed under the Beeching Plan.
CORONATION CELEBRATIONS 1953
Clip 3 is from the celebrations held to commemorate the Queen’s Coronations in 1953 with views down Main Street of the Celebration Arch and a clip of the old Mex Pub sign followed by a fancy dress parade
THORNER RAILWAY STATION
THORNER RAILWAY STATIONClip 5 is a short clip of a parcel being picked up from Thorner railway station in the late 1940’s showing the old railway station buildings and the coal drops for coal deliveries to Thorner.
NEW BELLS AT ST PETERS
This clip shows the old bells being removed from St Peters in 1965 with the Vicar William Verity in attendance with everyone rigidly following Health and Safety procedures.
